Marshall Universities Athletics Department will be offering a panel discussion Wednesday with a spotlight on Black History.
The panel, called “Spotlight on Athletics: Black History,” will have members from the athletic community speaking on what it means to be part of the herd and the impact Black History has had on the school's community and how the school will continue to grow.
The panel begins at 8:30 Wednesday morning and will include breakfast for attendees. In addition to a free meal, attendees will also receive tickets to Marshalls women's basketball game Saturday night, as they play Texas State.
In addition to Wednesday's event, the school will also be offering a variety of other Black History events throughout the month of February. February 13th and 15th are the next scheduled days for Black History events at the university.
The event on the 13th will be a discussion led by Dr. Karsoyna Whitehead, associate professor of Loyola University in Maryland. Whitehead's discussion will be called “Black Resistance: Centering Voices From Within the Veil,” at 4pm in the Shawkey Room in the Memorial Student Center.
The next event on the 15th will be Drinko Academy’s Annual Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lecture, which will be presented by Dr. Ericke S. Cage, president of West Virginia State University. Cages’ lecture will be called “The Future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” and will also be held in the Shawkey Room at 4:30pm.
This event is co-sponsored by the Woodson Lyceum, which has been helping introduce more Black History curriculum in schools since 2016. It is named after Carter G. Woodson, who is considered the father of Black History. Woodson was a coal miner and educator in West Virginia who aimed to improve teachings of Black History.
Marshall University's website has more information on Black History Month events and the Woodson Lyceum.
