Huff Spring Conference

Marshall Universities head football coach Charles Huff on Monday said he plans to build the foundation of a great team during the spring and summer leading into the fall.

Huff, who is going into his third season as the university's head football coach, wants to use this time to strengthen not just his players, but the staff and everyone who works to take the team places beyond where they are now.

Huff said that while looking for a new defensive coordinator to replace Lance Guidry, he does not plan on just picking the best sounding option. He stated that there will be no easy replacement for Guidry, and that he wants to find someone who can not only fill the coaching aspect but also someone who will be right for his team.

Huff also wants to avoid forcing someone into the same coaching role that is unique to the pervious coach, like Guidry. “Whenever you replace a coach, you have to be mindful that you're not replacing a coach,” Huff said.

He also spoke of his aspiring quarterbacks that are ready to show their skills on the field this spring. He said that the spot of star quarterback is supposed to be up in the air and open to any player, but that the “reality of it is Cam (Pedro) is a little bit ahead.”

Players know that the best of them will play, Huff said, and that this is what makes his quarterbacks stiver for excellence. “Cam’s job is to come out and make sure that none of these young guys are able to catch up with him,” and that it is Pedros job to push them to where he is.

“Somebody's got to be ready for the opportunity,” Huff said, adding on that he wants the newer players to try and reach for his spot now so that they are ready to move where he is when it's open.

Huff also sees the spring and summer as a way to try new techniques with the team before they go into play to see if they are worth using in the fall. “The beauty of spring is everybody gets a chance to improve without the (consequences),” Huff said.
